dull life updates

It has been exactly three months since I moved to the city, some things have been absolutely fantastic and others have been terrible. While being here I have leaned so much about not only myself but also about other people. Since moving into school I have gone through multiple groups of people whom I thought I was friends with but in the end they didn't turn out to be exactly the kind of people that I wanted to surround myself with.

Since here I have heard the phrase "I'm not here to make friends" throw around so many times I couldn't even be able to count them. With that being said it's not easy to know who you are able to trust, someone who might come off so genuine can be the complete opposite and end up stabbing you in the back. From this I have realized that it isn't worth it to try to make other people happy and the best way to take on this big city in such a competitive industry is to stop worrying about other people so much and focus on what is best for me.

I have been faced with some incredible opportunities while being here such as working backstage at a NYFW show  and interning for Patricia Field, a HUGE name in the styling community. I have been able to embrace myself and my style and not worry about what other people are thinking about it, because face it in New York  you can be whoever you want to be and no one is going to stop you. I have become incredibly close with my roommate and two girls who I feel I can actually trust.

I have been able to see multiple  free concerts, such as the global citizens festival in central park. Spending a day laying across the grass listening to John Mayor, Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder. I have gone to Live on Letterman twice for free to see Lorde and The Neighbourhood having fantastic seats for both of them.

I have also been faced with some less then fortunate events, like getting pick pocketed having my wallets and everything inside of it stolen, including my credit cards and I.D.  As horrible as this experience was its something that you learn from, you get to comfortable in where you are and don't remember to take in your surroundings and where you actually are.

School is incredibility difficult, and if you are someone considering going into the fashion industry don't take it lightly. It's much harder then people make it out to be, but personally being able to help other people select clothes that make them feel good about themselves and bring them more confidence in who they are is what makes me love this so much. As shallow as it may seem to some people knowing first hand how much the right outfit or a pair jeans that fit just right can take you from no self confidence to wanting to strut down a street is what makes me love what I want to do. I want everyone to be able to experience feeling good about themselves being everyone deserves at least that in their lives.

Knowing that I'm only just coming up the conclusion of my semester here and I still have four more to go, I can only anticipate what opportunities and adventures I will be faced with. The city has proven to be the glamorous life its intended to be while also being the complete opposite. But I honestly don't think I would change anything about it

Backstage Fashion Week

Working backstage at my first fashion show was everything I could have hoped, I arrived to the venue at 10am and immediately was told to pick a models garment rack to be there dresses. I choose a random garment rack and was paired up with a girl named Svetlana, we hit it off really well and were able to talk about many different things from the schools we were going too to the celebrities that we love.

After being able to  chat we helped the models get into the first look, this show consisted of one designer with 50 looks the show was incredibly organized and the show ran completely smoothly. The day consisted of 5 different time slots with 18 different collections. Each time slot was very different there were so many volunteers that it was hard to find a designer that needed help. For the second time slot I worked dressing and helping with quick changes for two  of the male models, there was not any complaining there.

The third show was by far my favorite out of them all because I got to work with the designer Tess Johnson who I worked with at the model fitting. She was very insistent that I was the only intern that was aloud to dress her models or touch any of the pieces. This made me feel really well because it was nice knowing how much she trusted me. We a few glitches and changes of models her collection went perfectly! She then trusted me to hold onto a garment bag with one piece of her collection that needed to be given to someone to wear that evening.

After this show we were given lunch, all the models and workers, mind you whoever says that models don't each that is completely false. I have never seen people run for food like that in my life and they finished all the cookies before we got there.

The last show of the night was insane, the designers we two men from out of the country and they saw my friend and I first. They thought it would be a good idea to put us in charge of organizing all the models, clothing and other interns. After setting up that each model had a dresser and that each dresser had their models shoes and garments the show began. My model had two changes during the show, it was the most stressful 10 minutes of my life. Her changes were about 30 seconds each which would have been much easier had she not had all button up shirts, I was buttoning her shirts up until she was walking out to the runway. All in all everything had turned out perfectly.

We were all invited to the after part that they were hosting after the day, but due to being there 13 hours and getting a migraine  I was far too ill to attend. I talked to the directors of NOLCHA who ran the show and gave all of my content information so I will hopefully be working with them for in February during fashion week once again.

Model Fitting

HAPPY NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!

Today, I had my first intern opportunity at NYFW which was a model fitting for Nolcha whom I am working backstage at their show later on this week.

I can't even begin to explain how nervous I was for this before leaving this afternoon, I was going into an area of the city that I don't travel to on an every day bases this opens a set of nerves in its own because being late was not an option and I would have to rely on myself to get there. Fortunately I did get there on time and I only made about one or two wrong turns. It was a really beautiful area and I did snap a few quick pictures on my phone while walking.

Once I got to the studio I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from it. I walked in and was just kind of told to start helping unpack the shoes there was about 6 large boxes of all different color and style heels. While working on that myself and the other girls who were also there interning all introduced ourselves and got to talking. It was nice to be able to talk to the other girls, some of them had interned for the company before and they were able to tell us what to expect and a little bit more about the people who were in charge. This was comforting because we found out that it was a pretty relaxed atmosphere and there wasn't really anything to be nervous about. We then did an inventory of all the different styles, colors, sizes and finishes of the shoes nothing to difficult.

At this point there wasn't much to be done anymore so I began to look around at the designers collections whom had been setting up. One collection caught my eye the minute she started unpacking everything so I didn't waste any time to go over and talk to her. I found out that she was Tess Johnson and she was 24 years old and she was from New York, we talked a lot and seemed to get along great. So I decided to work with her the rest of the day. This consisted of helping her try the clothing on different models and organizing everything. One of the most important things was learning how to put the clothes on the models without getting the clothes covered in make-up since is was all white and gray.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect of the model fitting but I definitively feel like I learned a lot of the general ideas of how everything was organized from the designers to the show days. I was NOT expecting to see the amount of boobs that I had to see that day but it was something that you began to not even notice as the day went on. Working the fitting before the actual show made me so much more comfortable for what was to come later on in the week, knowing more of  how things were going to need to be done and who I would be working with. These opportunity's don't seem like much when they are on paper but once you're there and getting involved you get to learn so many new things just by communicating with the people around you.

Why am I actually here...

I decided to start this blog to give myself somewhere to write about the amazing opportunities that I am getting faced with every day while living in NYC. Going to college in New York is completely different then your typical campus experience, we don't have much of a campus at that. Classes are held in midtown while most of us dorm on the upper east side.

This thought at first was extremely daunting because when normally visiting the city you stick with the areas that you know the most about. In the past few weeks I have ventured into many parts of the city that I had been dying to go to but never had the chance too. I went shopping in soho and attempted to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

All in all going to school in the city so far has been everything I hoped it would be, giving me chanced to do things that other people can only dream of doing. From seeing famous people pass you on the street to getting to intern at New York Fashion Week.

But anyway this is just an intro a little bit into what I'll actually decided to write about although I'm sure I'll add some extras.
